What is the ICN?

The Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) is a knowledge institute for management and preservation of moveable cultural heritage. The ICN has four main tasks: consulting on management and preservation of collections, performing research, managing the ICN collection and disseminating and sharing knowledge.

The combination of research, advice and collection management within one institute makes the ICN unique, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Museums, libraries, archives and other collection managers can take advantage of the services provided by the ICN. The ICN is located in Amsterdam and Rijswijk and is part of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Mission

The ICN works towards a society that handles its cultural heritage with full awareness so that this heritage can continue to fulfill its function in perpetuity.

Together with the keepers of the Dutch Collection and the knowledge it embodies, the ICN develops information that supports and improves the management and maintenance of the Collection. The ICN renders the significance of this information evident and recognizable and ensures its distribution.

The ICN is assigned by the Minister of OCW to manage a collection of moveable cultural heritage belonging to the Dutch State and strives for its greatest possible visibility.

The ICN offers its staff the opportunity to develop appropriate knowledge and skills and provides a working environment that stimulates creativity.
