The ink corrosion project at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage - a review

Han Neevel, Birgit Reissland

Ink corrosion, the degradation of paper objects by irongall inks, used formerly, is a long-known problem among conservators. International research has cleared a substantial part of its causes. Until recently there was no conservation treatment that could stop the degradation process. Therefore, conservators are very reluctant to treat objects damaged by ink corrosion.

Iron-gall ink and ink corrosion

Ad Stijnman

This article summarises the state of the art of the research into ink and ink corrosion.

Ink corrosion : side-effects caused by aqueous treatments for paper objects

Birgit Reissland

The aqueous treatment of paper objects suffering from iron gall ink corrosion continues to be a controversial issue.

The behaviour of iron and sulphuric acid during iron-gall ink corrosion

Han Neevel

The degradation of paper artefacts by iron-gall inks is caused by two ingredients in the ink: sulphuric acid and iron(II) sulphate.

The ink corrosion website

This website presents information on iron gall ink; its importance in (art)history; and its slow, self-destructing properties known as iron gall ink corrosion. The latter is a major threat to our cultural heritage and of concern to people throughout the world. This site was developed to inform collection keepers, conservators, scientists and any other interested parties of ongoing research on all aspects of iron gall ink corrosion.

(Im)possibilities of the phytate treatment of ink corrosion

Han Neevel

The chemistry of iron-gall ink and the corrosion caused by it is explained and its history revealed. The chemical structure of phytate and the way in which it neutralizes the catalytic activity of the free iron(II) ions is sketched.

Ink corrosion : comparision of currently used aqueous treatments for paper objects

Birgit Reissland, Suzan de Groot

The controversial topic regarding active treatment of ink-corroded artefacts still causes concern in the field of paper conservation.
